Don’t be black in Florida. Don’t be a woman in Texas. Don’t be poor in America.

Chris Rock retweeted this tweet by #nojustice about a month ago.

Today we learn that George Zimmermnan was spotted gun shopping in Florida. If we believe TMZ’s picture, he seemed very happy, smiled and proudly shook the hand of the gun shop owner.

As for Texas, we know this will be decided in the next gubernatorial elections between Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott and Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis. A Christian news network announced yesterday that a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas will be shutting down by the end of the month. Citing recent state budget cuts, spokespersons for Planned Parenthood explained that Texas has become an increasingly difficult state in which to perform abortions.

And poverty continues to be a problem that too many Americans choose to ignore. As the Huffington post reports today, people will either say "People shouldn't have babies if they can't afford them." Or “We were dirt poor but never asked for a handout, and I made it…”. Or "Why don't they just… " and people will suggest some ideas of things the poor should do to fix their situation, Because hypothetically, there are many solutions, as long as it does not involve helping them.

I would like to add a few more statements to that retweet:

Don’t be an immigrant in the country of Immigrants. Don’t be a non-Christian in a Southern small town. Don’t be an anti-gun pacifist if you live in those Christian towns. Don’t be gay if you live among the right-wing religious.

The big cities in America are what save this country from being stuck in the past century. Florida and Texas may have big cities, and people are in general more open minded and modern, but both states have vast open spaces where only few people live in small isolated towns, disconnected from the rest of the world and clinging to selfishness, superstitions, outdated beliefs, principles, and fear. Some of these people even make it to the cities, the news networks (Fox News) or run for office backed by the big corporations who use them to further their small government agenda. Because of them, the "Don't be" statements will continue to be relevant in the US.
